Hello & Welcome!

Front of the Retirement Home
“Altenheim” means “home for the aged”.  It was at one time a summer hotel and was called “Mount Belleview.”  Wheeling brewer Anton Reymann purchased and operated the hotel located on National Road near Bethany Pike.  The hotel was the most fashionable place for balls and state occasions in the days when Wheeling was the state capital.  In 1890 after having the house and grounds renovated, Anton and his wife Thusnelda gave it to a Board of Trustees to be used as a home for older women.  The formal opening of Altenheim took place on May 7, 1891.

After 60 years in Woodsdale, Altenheim moved to its present location in 1951. This site, the former home of John O. Schenk, was called “Uplands”, and was once the A.B. Paxton residence.  At the time that Altenheim moved, it is estimated that the Schenk residence was approximately 26 years old.

Altenheim today can accommodate up to 15 residents in private rooms.  The fee structure is a monthly rental and the rates include private furnished rooms and baths, meals and snacks, housekeeping, activities, transportation and free parking.  There is a registered nurse on duty and on call, medication supervision, laundry facilities and an in-house beauty shop.  The facility is secured, an aide is on duty 24 hours and there is a full-time housekeeping staff.  There is no application or admission fee.

Residents may add some of their own furnishings for a personal touch.  Guests may be invited for meals with advance notice.  Residents may take vacations and trips and are encouraged to maintain an active lifestyle.  Residents may bring their own linens and towels.  Residents may keep their car on site with a reserved parking space.  Residents should bring their own television.

Altenheim is licensed as assisted living by the WV Department of Health & Human Resources, Office of Health Facility Licensure and Certification and deficiency-free surveys are a standard for which the retirement home strives.  The retirement home is accessible to public transportation, shopping, churches, restaurants, medical facilities, and parks.
